Memory in music is rarely passive. The works in this recital are not transcriptions or quotations in the ordinary sense, but acts of creative remembrance, transforming existing musical worlds—opera, dance, popular song or the music of the past—into something new. From Liszt's operatic fantasy and Ravel's elegant waltzes to Earl Wild's virtuosic transformations of Gershwin and Godowsky's extraordinary Passacaglia, the programme traces different ways of remembering and reimagining music.

Earliness and lateness are not simply points in time. They offer different ways of experiencing the present: remembering what has been and confronting what remains. In Schubert’s penultimate sonata, composed in the last months of his life, an expansive lyricism surrounds a startling moment of violence and fragility in the second movement. Beethoven's early Pathétique offers a counterpoint to Schubert's lateness, while Schumann's Kinderszenen turns towards childhood itself from the perspective of adulthood.
